“It was a fine way to see out the European festival season. The Jersey crew - festival organisers and crowd - were brilliant. Top weekend." Groove Armada’s Andy Cato

“The Jersey folk really know how to let it hang out. I’ve made some great friends there and always have the best time… It’s a wonderful island, a beautiful island.” Mani, Primal Scream/Stone Roses.

::::.....

For anyone who grew up in Jersey and is not quite old enough to have entered adulthood prior to Jersey Live’s inception in 2004, it may be easy to take for granted the impact that the festival has had on this island. Back in the days pre-Jersey Live (BJL?), the only big name live atcs you might expect to see here would be along the lines of over-the-hill rockers (The Status Quo’s of this world), B-list pop acts (e.g. Jason Donovan) or if you were lucky, C-list indie bands (3 Colours Red at People’s Park circa ’97 anyone?). How the cultural landscape has changed since then, and from modest beginnings, Jersey Live has bloomed into something really quite special to both regulars and first time visitors.

Sticking to the policy of being bigger and better each year, Jersey Live 2010 didn’t disappoint; on first glance at the line up, with big names including PAUL WELLER, TINIE TEMPAH, GROOVE ARMADA and BIFFY CLYRO, and much anticpiated acts on the bill such as CASPA, CHASE & STATUS and DARWIN DEEZ, this had all the makings of a classic festival, and boy did it live up to the promise.

Selling out for the first time since it became a 10,000 capacity event in 2007, the omens were good from the start of the weekend, and with gloriously sunny weather shining upon the Royal Jersey Showground, all that was left was for the acts to deliver. The Main Stage, scene of so many memorable performances over the years, delivered an eclectic and at times thrilling offering of music, perhaps most memorably from Sunday night headliner Paul Weller, whose set was comprised largely of newer solo material and a peppering of seminal Jam hits such as ‘That’s Entertainment’ and ‘Town Called Malice’. That the elder statesman of indie managed to engage the young and old members of the audience is testament to the Modfather’s enduring appeal. Other highlight sets came from dance heavyweights Chase & Status (with arguably the most energetic moshpit of the weeekend), new prince of UK rap Tinie Tempah and Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro, whilst the surprise standout of the weekend on the Main Stage inarguably came from New York indie outfit Darwin Deez, whose infectious sense of fun made them a huge draw not just at Jersey Live, but at festivals Europe-wide all summer.

The Dance Arena boasted possibly its strongest bill to date, with big names such as Calvin Harris and dubstep pioneer Caspa headlining, and up-and-comers including Drums of Death, Jaguar Skills and local boys Schema amongst the acts that got the place jumping, proving that the JL organisers seriously know their stuff when it comes to filling the dancefloor.

The other main areas at the festival were a huge success too – the Les Inrocks Magic Stage, although thin in crowd numbers at times (possibly due to being tucked away from the main arena), offered some of the most exciting, interesting and original bands performing at Jersey Live, and those that missed out on corking shows by the likes of Jamaica, Django Django and Here We Go Magic really DID miss out!. Still, there’s always 2011.
