Poets, politicians and stars of stage and screen head to Ilkley. Opened by Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, the poetry line-up includes Gyles Brandreth, Pam Ayres, Lemn Sissay and Raymond Antrobus, alongside a new commission from Poet-in-Residence, Collette Bryce. David Suchet, Prue Leith and Booker-longlisted Oyinkan Braithwaite also make appearances at the 17-day Festival, renowned for its artistic excellence and diverse programme. Politics features Alastair Campbell and Chris Mullen, with journalists Mark Radcliffe, Kirsty Wark, Dylan Jones, Martin Sixsmith and Paul Mason. Themes include World Changing Women with the BBC’s former China editor Carrie Gracie sharing her battle over equal pay, Caroline Criado-Perez exploring the gender gap, and Yvette Cooper MP on the Power of Women’s Voices. There’s a celebration of the explosion in Irish writing including Faber’s new short story collection Being Various by Belfast-born novelist Lucy Caldwell. Youngsters can enjoy the Children’s Festival headlined by Clare Balding with Conn Igguldun returning with the Dangerous Book for Boys, Andy Stanton, best-selling creator of the Mr Gum series, and Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock offering a grand tour of the solar system. The packed programme continues with poetry and writing workshops, film screenings, stargazing walks onto the iconic Ilkley Moor and Fringe events at venues throughout the elegant spa town.
