Back in 1994 – when preparations for ROTOTOM No. 1 were in motion - few would have believed that such an event, conceived of and aimed at a small or niche market – despite all the odds, including the absence of large scale sponsorship or generous public funding - would become one of the world’s biggest reggae festival.
ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH is unique in that the festival is an all- day-long event. The concerts start at dusk, the dancehall fills up at night and the mornings and afternoons are dedicated to relaxation, cultural activities and social concerns.

The secret of ROTOTOM’s success is not solely the renewed popular interest in reggae music. For many years now, ROTOTOM’s organisers have promoted the concept of a ‘gathering’. That is, a ‘gathering’ designed to address the public’s musical, entertainment, social and political agendas.
